Jodie tells her story about how she and her partner Karl used the techniques to achieve a calm birth for their beautiful daughter Niah…

Beautiful Niah

I started the HypnoBirthing course when I was 34 weeks pregnant and after reading about it on the internet I was excited to see how it worked. I loved reading the book and practicing the breathing techniques and the exercises.

I woke up on Saturday morning having mild surges which were half an hour apart, they continued all day and at 6pm they were 5 minutes apart but still really mild. I didn’t feel at all scared or nervous, just very excited. I started doing the relaxation techniques at 7pm, I put the CD on and my partner, Karl, did the light touch massage to help me get into a deep sense of relaxation.

I felt very calm and in control all the time. I took a bath and sat on my ball listening to music and at 11.30pm my waters broke. I decided to contact the midwife to let her know and she asked if I wanted to call up to the labour suite so they could check all was well. I arrived at the hospital at 2am. My surges were still 5 minutes apart but were getting stronger. I still felt very calm but very excited.

The midwife monitored the baby for a little while and she said everything was fine so we decided to go home where we felt more comfortable. At 6am my surges were 2 minutes apart, at this point I started to get a little panicky as I was worried the baby was coming so we went back to the hospital , the midwife examined me and I was at 6 centimetres. I was very happy at this point as I knew it wouldn’t be long until my baby was here.

I planned to have a water birth; however my babies’ heart rate kept dropping every time I had a surge so they had to keep monitoring her heart continuously.

Niah was born at 10.55am on Sunday 19th December 2010. I was very proud of myself and my partner as we worked together throughout my labour and although there were times when I thought I couldn’t carry on, he stayed strong for me and kept me relaxed.

I only used gas and air for pain relief and I was happy with that. Before I did the HypnoBirthing course I had planned to have the epidural and thankfully I didn’t because I honestly didn’t need it. The breathing techniques helped my through my labour tremendously and I hope my second birth is as easy as this one. I’d like to say a big thank you to Sarah for all her help during and after the course. She was not only a good HypnoBirthing coach but has become a good friend.

Thank you Sarah, I couldn’t have done it without you xxx
